Neodymium Magnets vs Samarium Cobalt Magnets: What You Need to Know

Neodymium Magnets vs Samarium Cobalt Magnets: What You Need to Know

Neodymium and samarium cobalt magnets are both highly powerful magnets belonging to the rare earth family. Rare earth magnets have a high resistance to demagnetization, and are not at risk of losing their magnetization if they are exposed to other magnets or dropped. These two powerful magnets deliver high performance even when operating at high temperatures, and Bunting is capable of manufacturing neodymium and samarium cobalt magnets—as well as any other types of magnets—in any custom designed shape or size. While both neo and samarium cobalt magnets offer high power, there are differences between the two to consider when selecting the ideal magnet for your application.

Samarium Cobalt Magnets: High Strength, High Endurance

Samarium cobalt magnets are slightly less powerful than neo magnets, as well as being somewhat more brittle. However, samarium cobalt magnets have several unique traits that neodymium magnets lack. Samarium cobalt magnets have a strong resistance to corrosion and oxidation, making them an excellent choice for difficult environments. For example, samarium cobalt magnets are able to resist saltwater corrosion, meaning they excel in marine and offshore environments. Samarium cobalt magnets are able to operate at temperatures up to 300 °C, which makes them suitable for high temperature environments as well. Samarium cobalt magnets are the ideal selection for applications where a little power can be sacrificed in exchange for corrosion resistance.

Neodymium Magnets: Powerful and Versatile

Neodymium magnets are well known for their exceptional power and versatility. They can safely be used in environments up to 200 °C. While this is not as high compared to samarium cobalt’s maximum operating temperature of 300 °C, neodymium magnets offer significantly higher strength. Neo magnets are available up to 52MGOe, while samarium cobalt magnets are only available up to 32MGOe. Not only are neodymium magnets extremely powerful, they are also quite affordable, making them suited for an exceptionally broad range of applications. Neodymium magnets may be used in everything from MRI machines, to motors, to consumer products such as cellphones.

Bunting is able to custom design any magnet in any size or shape to meet the needs of your application. Our engineers will work with you every step of the way to assist you in selecting and designing a custom magnet or magnetic application.
